Technical Note: Using Microsoft SQL Server Express for LANsurveyor's Repository

LANsurveyor's Repository utilizes either Microsoft SQL Server or SQL Server Express. Use these instructions to download, install and configure Microsoft SQL Server Express as LANsurveyor's Repository.

Download SQL Server Express

Download SQL Server Express from msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/ to a location you can specify during the Repository installation.

Note: SQL Server Express requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. You must install the .Net Framework befores installing SQL Server Express. The Microsoft link above has all of the details on requirements for installing SQL Server Express.

The name of the installer file is sqlexpr.exe, and it is approximately 53.8MB. You do not need to download the Management Studio addition in order to use SQL Server Express with LANsurveyor.

Configure LANsurveyor

Once the download is complete, follow these steps:

• Run LANsurveyor


• Go to Tools>Options


• Choose the Repository tab


• Click on Install Repository


• Select Install New Database and click Next


• Choose a username and password for LANsurveyor to use when connecting to the Repository and click Finish.

LANsurveyor looks for the sqlexpr.exe SQL Server Express installation file in C:\. LANsurveyor will prompt you for the location of the installer file if you downloaded the file to a different location.

Once the installer is located, LANsurveyor automatically installs an instance of SQL Server Express with the necessary tables.
